An increasing number of people are either bringing their pets with them to Spain, or else acquiring
them here, reassured by the Fact that if they have to move for any reason, their pet doesn't have to
be left behind.
If you intend to live permanently in Spain, most vets recommend that you have a dog vaccinated against
rabies before arrival, which saves you having to get your dog vaccinated on arrival here. It is also
advisable to have dogs vaccinated against other diseases such as distemper and hardpad, and cats
immunized against feline gastro enteritis and typhus. Health insurance is available from a number of
insurance companies.
There are kennels and catteries throughout Spain, but it is advisable to book well in advance if you plan
to leave your pet at a kennel or cattery, particularly for school holiday periods.
If you are thinking of acquiring a dog or cat in Spain, the best place to look is your local animal shelter.
There is always a demand for a good home, particularly during the summer months when, sadly, many people dump
their pets in the ‘campo’ rather than pay for it’s care in their absence.
Vet costs in Spain are far cheaper that in the UK.
